How Paco Pads are making the world a better place

Paco pads=a good night sleep

When you’re on a whitewater rafting trip, the last thing you want to worry about is being uncomfortable at night. That’s where Paco Pads comes in – they make the best sleeping mats for any whitewater rafting trip! So, let’s dive in, and let me show you how Paco Pads are making the world a better place!

The alternative to Paco Pads

There are a lot of different sleeping pads on the market, and they are not all created equal. You can break them into these categories:

  • Blow-up Mattresses
  • Inflatable sleeping pads
  • Closed-cell Foam sleeping pads
  • High-density foam sleeping pads

Blow-up Mattresses

Every year my entire family goes on a camping trip. My wife and I typically pack light, and I oftentimes will sleep under the stars. However, my parents take a different approach: bring everything. They usually have to take two cars to bring it all. They want to be as comfortable as possible. Who could blame them!

My parents use a blow-up king-size mattress for our trips, and it works great. Blow-up mattresses are a great option for a temporary bed. They are easy to inflate and can be transported easily, but not on a river. If you are conducting rafting trips from a base camp, this could be a viable option.

The downside of blow-up mattresses is that they need constant re-inflation, which can get annoying after a while. They are also bulky and require a lot of room to pack–hence why my parents take two vehicles!

Closed-cell Foam sleeping pads

Closed-cell foam sleeping pads are both long-lasting and lightweight. They’re a wonderful alternative for individuals who don’t want to worry about their pad inflating. The last thing you want to worry about during a whitewater rafting trip is your sleeping pad deflating in the middle of the night!

I have used Thermarest’s Z-lite pad in the past. They are around $60, and very durable.

It’s made of closed-cell foam, so it doesn’t absorb water. With a weight of only 14 oz., the foam-only design is easy to transport and incredibly durable. Although it offers little cushion for sleeping. So, you will have to find flat, forgiving ground for your Z-Lite for a good night’s rest.

Inflatable sleeping pads

When space is an issue, you’ll need a light and tiny sleeping pad. That is why inflatable designs are ideal. There are several excellent brands on the market, but Thermarest continues to be the standard.

You can get a Thermarest sleeping pad for just over $200. I have used the one shown below, and have quite that I offer my clients on trips. I like to use these with sleeping cots. They add to the comfort as well as help keep my clients warm.

Inflatable sleeping pads

The main disadvantage, like all inflatable pads, is that it’s delicate. You won’t be able to sit on it near a campfire. A single stray ember would ruin your night. It’s also rather noisy when you move around on it, but the fact that it weighs under a pound and has few drawbacks are well worth the price.

Paco Pads & how they are making the world a better place

The raft is your transportation to transport all of the facilities you’ll need to have a great time. You can bring anything you would normally store at home. I have posted an article on what you should bring on whitewater rafting trips if you would like to learn more. There is more room for a larger sleeping pad. However, you don’t want your sleeping pad to get wet but you don’t want to use up dry bag space with it. This is where the Paco Pad comes in!

They’re constructed of high-density foam and are covered with a waterproof PVC, making them virtually unbreakable. You may leave them on the ground late at night and fall asleep without a second thought. The biggest disadvantage is that they’re expensive, right around $250, and take up a lot of space. I typically use mine as a seat for my clients on the raft. This saves space and provides a comfortable seat at the same time.
