Introduction to finding your perfect life jacket
If you’re looking for the best life jacket for your needs, you’ve come to the right place. This article will discuss the top 5 life jackets for 2022. Whether you’re a whitewater rafting enthusiast or just looking for peace of mind on the boat, we have the perfect option. Keep reading to learn more about Type V life jackets and find the perfect one for your needs!
In a previous article, found here, I go through the various classes of life jackets in greater depth, but for this piece, we’ll stick to Type III and V. However, my recommendations are based on low-profile life jackets. Type V jackets are made for more extreme conditions and can be bulky and uncomfortable. Low-profile life jackets offer similar protection without all the extra bulk.
I have owned life jackets from each of the manufacturers that am recommending here, and stand by their quality and comfort. So, let’s dive in!
Know before you go!
Measure your chest size and weight before you go so you can double-check the limits on the inside of the PFD. Buoyancy and weight capacity vary significantly by brand, model, and size.
Ensure that the chest piece rests low and tight on your chest, does not rise above your ears if you pull up on the shoulder straps, and will not fall below your shoulders if you tug down on it. Women’s-specific PFDs are increasingly available from many businesses.
The ideal PFD for river rafting has ample pockets for rescue equipment and won’t get in the way if you need to re-enter a boat. I also like to make sure it is comfortable to swim in.
NRS Ninja
The NRS Ninja is perfect for those who want a slim, lightweight life jacket. It is made with ripstop nylon and has an adjustable belt for a comfortable fit. It is a low-profile life jacket that is perfect for Whitewater rafting. It also features quick-release buckles and a front zip pocket.

Choosing your perfect life jacket
Choosing the perfect life jacket for you can be difficult when so many options exist. We’ve included some of our favorites that will fit a wide range of body types, offer plenty of safety features, and provide all-around comfort. You can best go to a local whitewater rafting shop and try a few on. Over the years, I have used many different ones, but my personal favorite is the NRS Zen.
As a river guide, I like to have a rescue PFD that is also comfortable for long river trips. Zen fits the bill. It is lightweight and comfortable, with plenty of pockets for all my gear. I can also quickly release the buckles if I need to get out in a hurry.
The bottom line is that you want to find a life jacket that will make you feel safe and comfortable while on the water.
